CBSE plans to conduct class 10 Board exams twice a year from 2025-2026 onwards

A draft policy has been put in public domain by the CBSE and the Board will accept responses from all stakeholders — schools, teachers, parents, students till March 9, 2025. “The responses will be scrutinized and policy will be finalized subsequently,” said Sanyam Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations, CBSE.

This decision follows the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 guidelines, which aim to reduce exam pressure by providing students with flexibility in assessments.

As per the draft norms, the first phase of the exams will be conducted from February 17 to March 06, while the second phase will be conducted from May 05 to 20. The total duration of examination will be 34 days.

Highlights of the proposed draft:

  1. Students will have the option to appear for both or choose specific subjects in either session based on their preference.
  • The first and second editions of the board exams will also act as supplementary exams, and no special exams will be conducted in any circumstances.
  • Both the examinations will be conducted on full syllabus and the candidates will be allotted the same examination centers in the two editions.
  • Except Science, Maths, Social Science, Hindi, English, rest of the subjects are grouped in the following manner:
    i) A Regional and Foreign languages in one group
    ii) Rest of the subjects in one group
  •  Examination of Science, Maths, Social Science, Hindi and English will be conducted on a fixed day as done currently.
  • Examination of Regional and Foreign Languages will be done in one go on a single day.
  • Examination of remaining subjects will be conducted 2 times to 3 times based on the choices of the students on 2 or 3 days.
  • For the Sport’s students, they have to appear in any of the two Board Examinations of Class X and no separate examination will be conducted for them.
